House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello Responds to Pawsox leaving RI

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello issued the following statement today, with respect to the team’s decision to leave Rhode Island for Worcester.

“It is very unfortunate and extremely disappointing that the PawSox have decided to leave Rhode Island.  The state’s proposal contained strong protections for the taxpayers and shifted the risk to the investors.  It was responsive to the concerns of the taxpayers who made it clear that they did not want to accept the risk contained within the original proposal.  It is disheartening the PawSox did not show the same loyalty to the City of Pawtucket and the State of Rhode Island as the taxpayers and fans have shown to them for many decades.”

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello put taxpayers, not the millionaire owners of the Pawsox, first. How can anyone complain?

One has to feel some level of empathy for Mattiello, since Rhode Islanders, in typical RI fashion, complained about the potential of giving the team tens of millions of dollars, when private equity firms wouldn’t. Now, they’re complaining that the team is leaving.

We can’t have it both ways. And anyone who tries shouldn’t be taken seriously.
