The Touro Synagogue, located in Newport, is the oldest synagogue building that is still standing in hte United States. It dates back to the Colonial era.

It is where George Washington addressed his famous letter concerning religious freedom, the principle on which Rhode Island was founded. 

The next annual reading of George Washington’s historic letter “To the Hebrew Congregation at Newport” will take place on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at 1:00 pm.
The letter, which honors our precious freedoms, continues to be lauded and commemorated as possibly having the greatest impact on America and American Jewry.Reservations are required and seating is limited.
